What Is Lissencephaly?

Lissencephaly means “smooth brain”.   Smooth brain means the normal convulsions or folds of the brain are missing. Typically, a small head, also known as microcephaly, is common with this diagnosis. (National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke). It is a rare-gene linked brain malformation that can occur in isolation or within a syndrome (National Organization for Rare Disorders). Seizures, feeding difficulties, limited growth, intellectual disability and impaired motor abilities have been identified within this population.
